Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFR or BFRT) is a technique that involves applying controlled external pressure to a limb to partially restrict blood flow during exercise. At Prevail, BFR training uses a computerized cuff (similar to an automated blood pressure cuff) to safely and precisely apply the desired pressure for each patient. This technique can be applied to both upper and lower limbs to address a variety of issues.
BFR is particularly beneficial when pain limits a person’s ability to perform strengthening exercises. It helps prevent weakness and muscle atrophy without overloading healing tissues, which is especially important during recovery from surgery or injury. By reducing blood flow to the limb, BFR mimics the effects of higher-intensity training without putting stress on joints, muscles, or tendons. In simple terms, it allows you to achieve the benefits of high-intensity exercise while using much lighter loads. Our therapists often use BFRT to treat patients with conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis, or those in the early stages of recovery after surgery.
